A covert earpiece is a very small listening device that is often worn by someone who wishes to be able to wear an earpiece and not have it be visible. The advantage of such an earpiece is that the wearer is able to use it as a radio accessory and yet not have others be aware that they are using an earpiece to communicate with others. Newscasters, sportscasters, talk show hosts and even the weather presenter may all wear an invisible earpiece when live on air, allowing them to receive critical information or instruction without the viewers being aware. Engineers and producers have the ability to communicate with the on-air personalities while airing live and direct them as needed, to ensure that everything proceeds without a hitch. This is particularly helpful with live television where a re-take is not an option, or when a story may break during a news bulletin and the information can be fed immediately to the newscaster, who in turn will advise viewers of the late-breaking news. 

A covert earpiece can be beneficial for anyone making a public speech. The speaker can be directed by someone behind the scenes and even given cues to help them remember what to say next, all the while leaving the audience without any awareness of it happening. This is a common practice and can save a speaker from the embarrassing situation of a temporary loss of train of thought. A quick reminder via the earpiece and the speech can continue with any evidence of a slip. During the past century, human ears have enjoyed less freedom than ever before, but more music, thanks to the invention of headphones. In 1910, a Nathaniel Baldwin invented headphones in the kitchen of his Utah home, forever subjecting our ears to the shackles of small speakers.

Aside from allowing you to furtively listen to the latest Carly Rae Jepsen single, headphones enable people to privately and individually interact with media, even when in a noisy room or a crowded subway. Headphones are also crucial tools used for recording music, and producing films, TV and radio programming.

Here is a timeline of how we’ve gone from Baldwin’s “Baldy Phones” to Apple’s earbuds EarPods and “Beats by Dre.”

1910: Nathaniel Baldwin Invents the First Headphones

The legend states that Lt. Comdr. A. J. Hepburn of the U.S. Navy received for prototype for a pair of telephones fashioned into a headset, along with a letter from Nathaniel Baldwin written with purple ink on blue and pink paper. After initially disregarding the message, Hepburn tested the device and found that it worked surprisingly well to transmit sound.

The Navy began to ask for more headphones from Baldwin, who could only accept orders of 10 at a time because he was producing them in his kitchen.

If it’s not evident from his choice of stationery and writing utensil, Baldwin was an interesting fellow. He was a fundamentalist Mormon who studied at Brigham Young Academy (later renamed Brigham Young University), and eventually earned an electrical engineering degree from Stanford.

He returned to BYU as a professor but was fired for speaking out in favor of polygamy, a practice which the Mormon Church renounced in 1890. (Though he endorsed polygamy, he had only one wife.)

Until this point, people used headphones almost exclusively for radio communication.

John Koss was born and raised in Wisconsin. He got married in 1952, at which time he started a business using a cash wedding gift with which him and his bride were supposed to buy a sofa, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society.

While introducing a portable phonograph he wanted to rent to patients in Milwaukee hospitals, he revealed the original Koss SP3 Stereophones. Initially intended to be a sidebar, the headphones proved revolutionary because their sound quality made them optimal for listening to music. The Koss Corporation, located in Milwaukee, is still making headphones today.

1979: Sony Releases ‘Walkman,’ Headphones Go on a Diet

Before portable music players, headphones tended to be big. Baldwin’s original set weighed upwards of a pound.

Koss’ stereophones were circumaural, meaning the earpads would literally engulf your ears. It made sense at the time. “Audiophiles” could listen to the latest Beatles, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin albums in the comfort of their homes, and the bulbus design of their headphones helped to block outside noise.

With the help of the Sony “Walkman,” recorded music soon liberated itself from the home stereo, creating a need for more portable headphones. Conveniently, a lightweight set of MDR-3L2 headphones was included with the portable cassette player. As opposed to Koss’ circumaural headphones, Sony’s were supra-aural, meaning the earpads pressed against the ears.

 

 

1989: Dr. Amar Bose Introduces the First Noise-Reducing Headset

On a flight home from Zurich in 1978, Dr. Amar Bose tried an early set of electronic headphones that were newly onboard for passenger entertainment — but he could barely hear anything with the overwhelming cabin noise. He returned to Boston and set up a research program at Bose Corporation (which he founded in 1964), to investigate how ambient noise could be reduced with active noise cancellation. The Noise Reduction Technology Group (NRTG) grew out of that program, and in 1989, the company introduced the first noise-reduction headset, designed for the aviation industry.

2001: Apple iPod Includes Earbuds, Which Now Total 600 Million

The trend towards smaller and more portable headphones eventually led to earbuds and in-earphones, which only differ in the degree to which they wedge into the ear canal.

In 2001, Apple introduced the iPod to the world. The iPod, and later iPhone and iPad, comes with a now-iconic set of basic white earbuds. A decade later, iPod sales have topped 300 million. Begin to do the math, totaling sales of iPods, iPhones and iPads, and you begin to realize there are an astronomical number of Apple earbuds in circulation.

During the announcement of a long-awaited upgrade the company’s stock headset at the iPhone 5 unveiling on Sept. 12, Apple said that it had shipped 600 million sets of the first generation of earbuds — that’s roughly one for every 12 people on the planet. Regardless of your opinion on the quality of the product, those earbuds get around.

2008: Beats by Dr. Dre Hits the Market

Hip hop artist and producer Dr. Dre teamed up with Interscope Chairman Jimmy Iovine to launch Beats by Dr. Dre, helping to solidifying headphones as a fashion statement. The brand has recruited celebrities, including Will.i.am, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Lebron James, to endorse the products. Today, Beats by Dr. Dre has 63% market share in U.S. for headphones priced over $100.

2011: Sennheiser Sells $40,000 Orpheus Headphones, World’s Most Expensive

At an audio show in Seoul, South Korea, the German headphone company Sennheiser unveiled the world’s most expensive headphones. The company released 300 sets of the Orpheus headphones, which were priced at 30,000 Euros, or roughly $41,000 a piece.

2012: Apple Redefines Earbuds with the EarPods

Headphones have come a long way in the past 100 years, revolutionizing the way we consume media and the way we communicate. What the hell is an Radio Earpiece?

An earpiece is a part of an instrument that is placed on or in the ear.

Technically, all earphones are also earpieces, as the term is very broadly defined. For example, the part of the telephone that you hold up to your ear is an earpiece. Doctor’s stethoscopes also include earpieces and specialist earpieces are also commonly used with two way radio equipment. These are all different devices, but they share the same name. The term is also used to describe the two ‘arms’ that keep a pair of glasses attached to the wearer.

For our purposes, however, we’ll be talking about mobile phone earpieces, the kind that allow a wearer to operate their phone on a ‘hands free’ basis (e.g. when driving). Such devices are commonly known as ‘Bluetooth Headsets’ because they use Bluetooth technology, (itself named for Harold Bluetooth, who was born in about 935 and was king of both Denmark and Norway before his death in 985 – but that’s just trivia, you don’t need to know that!).

Essentially, an earpiece turns electronic signals into sound waves and then directs those same sound waves into the ear. This allows you to hear the person on the other end of the phone. There are many different styles of mobile phone earpiece, but there are only two major types.

A Bluetooth headset allows your mobile phone to be safely stored away in your pocket, leaving your hands free to perform any task you see fit. Generally, the audio quality is poor and only works over very short distances, but it is acceptable for speaking and listening, conversations between friends, conference calls and so on.

Bluetooth headsets are popular because they allow a busy person easy access to a phone, without having to fumble around in their pockets or put things down. They are a convenience first and foremost, but they can be very useful for drivers, commuters and businesspeople on the go.

What happens when one of the earphones stops functioning? very best solution here

There are many reasons for this everyday (yet absurdly annoying) phenomenon. Usually, though, it’s basically due to the loose wire which enable it to frequently be set by pushing the cable in the direction of the earpiece and, if needs be, fixing it into place with a little electrical tape, super glue, or other adhesive.

Now and again, if ever the earpieces have an inline volume wheel, that can be the reason. That one is slightly difficult to fix, but you could always try the ‘wire trick’ pointed out above and see if it works. If not, then open the volume wheel and re-solder the cables into place (be warned, this will invalidate most warranties, so if ever the ‘phones continue to be covered, just send ‘em back and find replacements). 

Avoiding stuff like this happening in the future, it’s highly recommended to wrap your cables carefully and to avoid stressing your headphones. No, I don’t mean you should give Motorhead a break and simply play floaty, soothing New-Agey music on them, I mean that you shouldn’t have them within your back pocket whenever you sit down and you should detach them gently from your ears after use (this will sound evident, and you’d be astounded how some people simply rip ‘em out).

Another thing to take care for is the jack, if ever the cable is fraying/wearing around the jack, then that can also be a problem. Luckily, like so many things in life, a small amount of electrical strip can really come in useful, just ensure that the copper wiring is tightly bound and it should return to standard usage in no time.

Now and then, however, it is simply a sign that the headphones are knackered and no amount of skillful tinkering can repair them. Typically, in these cases, the challenge is inside. This particular variant on the trouble also attacks earpieces of any price range, be they Poundland specials or your year old Sennheiser Eargasm headset. I’m reminded of a Shakespeare quote from Hamlet, something about a king and the guts of an beggar, but I can’t be bothered to look the whole thing up right now. You get the point I’m attempting to make though, everything dies ultimately, no matter how much it cost you.

Will I be Able to Hear Bone Conduction Headphones Even if I Wear Earplugs?

Because bone conduction bypasses the ear entirely and directly stimulates the ossicles (which is the scientific name for the tiny bones that reside in your inner ear, as well as the rationale behind comic book hero Daredevil’s athletic prowess), it is entirely possible to stick your ear plugs in and still listen to your ‘Bonephones’.

 

In some respects, it’s actually preferable. Y’see Nick, using headphones is fine and dandy, until you have to turn the volume all the way up in order to drown out noisy children, busy traffic and/or people shouting into their phones all around you. After that, if you increase the volume to too great a degree, you can expose your ears to sounds that can actually permanently damage your hearing.

 

Bone conduction, however, carries much less of a risk, because it does not effect the parts of the ear most at risk from loud noises.

 

Hearing is a process that actually has several stages. At first, your ear picks up sound waves, the sound waves pass into your middle ear (specifically, your auditory canal) before hitting the eardrum. The eardrum then vibrates, passing the sound down to the aforementioned ossicles (‘aforementioned ossicles’ is a lovely phrase, don’t you think?) From there, the ossicles transmit the sound to the cochlea, which is a fluid-filled structure that encodes the sound information in order for our brain to decode it (this is not unlike the way a wireless mouse works, actually).

 

Yup, the inner ear is a wacky world.

 

Essentially, bone conduction technology rattles the ossicles in the same way that they’d rattle in your inner ear, it just, to turn a phrase my father is particularly fond of ‘cuts out the middle man’. It really is an interesting invention.

 

So, as you see, there is no way a pair of earplugs pose any problem at all to your enjoying music or audio content on your Bonephones. I hope this helps. You’ll likely find this method especially useful if you happen to find yourself on a long plane journey and seated next to a disgruntled infant.

 

I’m actually fairly certain that bone conduction technology was invented during a similar scenario.

In addition, there is a built-in ‘push to speak’ button and microphone, but it is considerably smaller than the one discovered on the majority other pieces.

The Motorola gp340 earpiece features a similar sprung lapel clip as our last model, a surgical grade acoustic eartube (as well as a spare tip) and a Kevlar-reinforced cable. It also comes included with flashy drawstring pouch as well. Add to this a 6-month warranty (included within the price) and you’re certainly onto a winner.

Sound-wise, the GP340 earpiece provides clear, reliable sound and performs well in trying weather conditions.

However, the Motorola gp340 earpiece isn’t quite a top-range product, it represents fantastic value, evidently, and it works fine for many tasks, but if you have got specialist requirements, then you should maybe stick with this series and see what else is out there.

On the whole, the Gp 340 earpiece is an excellent product that offers fantastic value for money. It will do a great job in most conditions and comes pretty favorably recommended all round.
